Fyrtornet, Malmö | Sweden
11 levels make Fyrtornet Sweden's tallest timber office building and has now been completed. It was built using 1.640 m³ CLT BBS and 1.030 m³ glulam. Even the entire staircase and the lift shafts were done in solid timber. The building itself houses a city library, meeting spaces and several office spaces. A red wooden facade, which is typical for Sweden, is used on the outside while exposed spruce dominates the interior. Architecturally connecting the exterior with the interior and hidden behind a second facade, spacious terraces provide space for relaxation and exchange of ideas. The challenging statics and project planning including works planning was completed in a mere 15 months. The solid wood elements were made at the two binderholz site in Jenbach and Unternberg while the Hallein site served as the railway loading hub. In order to minimise the time needed for assembly, which took seven months, most solid wood element joints were prefabricated.
Valckensteyn residential building, Rotterdam | Netherlands
The largest residential timber construction project in the Netherlands is currently being built in Rotterdam. The site used to be home to a building of the same name in the past - Valckensteyn. The building had been erected in the 1970s and was demolished in 2012 to make room for a contemporary residential complex. Formerly offering 200 flats, the new building will comprise 82 modern, ecological 3- and 4-bedroom flats with separate balconies, district heating and solar panels on the roof. The solid wood building elements' high degree of prefabrication saves time and money at the construction site. Additionally, 61 flat partitioning walls were prefabricated at the binderholz site in Hallein, after which they were protected against the weather and delivered to the construction site. The flat partitioning walls meet the high sound insulation demands and already include electrical outlets and lifting systems. To protect all solid wood elements, but especially the flat partitioning walls, from the weather, a custom moisture management system was created and implemented.
Vilberg Elementary School, Eidsvoll | Norway
Vilberg Skole, an educational building project in Eidsvoll, Norway, stands for sustainability and innovation in school construction. The architectural and construction team opted for an innovative approach in which wood served as the primary building material for the structure of the building and rooms. This not only markedly reduced its carbon footprint but also created a natural ambience and warm atmosphere and thus, an appealing learning environment, thanks to the use of exposed solid wood on the walls, ceilings and the roof. To retain the latter, the connections had to be made in such a way that they would remain invisible after installation. High loads and large windows made this detail harder to implement, but we prevailed in the end. The multi-purpose hall was equipped with a glulam roof construction with steel struts to span the 30 m wide hall. Apart from these special features, many proven and often used standard details were employed.
