Expansion in our Nordic sites

JAS (Japanese Agricultural Standard) certification, new softwood lumber line and pine glulam production

Binderholz Nordic Oy took over a further softwood lumber line at the start of 2017, and a part of the continuously growing binderholz Group. Whereas complex small-scale series as well as large-scale series can be machined on the new softwood lumber line, the acquisition of the new glulam factory has massively expanded our position, particularly on the Japanese market, and added greater breadth to our product range.

Certification was inevitable as our presence in Japan continues to grow, as all products used in Japan have to be qualified, certified and monitored in accordance with the Japanese JAS standard.  JAS certification and its associated processes are similar to the procedures and processes involved with European certification for structural building products.

During the takeover of the glulam factory, a JAS-certified grading machine for the mechanical grading of glulam lamination strength became operational in the Lieksa sawmill. Extensive sample sorting and examinations were carried out in binderholz’s laboratory in Lieksa for this purpose. Binderholz Nordic Oy was finally granted JAS certification. The glulam factory, which has a capacity of 50,000 m3, only produces high-quality pine glulam.

Important improvements were also carried out on the sawing line, drying capacity and the biomass heating system at the Nurmes site. The investments include, among other things, replacement of the old single-shaft circular saw by a double-shaft Linck circular saw. At the same time improvements were made to the controller to improve the process.
