A two-storey bedroom and wellness wing has been added to the Hotel Sand in the Vinschgau Valley. Overall the extension includes 12 newly constructed nature suites, increasing the hotel’s occupancy from 24 to 84 beds. This annex is separate from the rest of the hotel and can only be reached by a connecting bridge at 1st floor Level.

The interplay of materials
The building stands on a coloured concrete foundation, on which, in turn, a solid timber construction in binderholz CLT BBS is built. Particular attention was paid to the interplay and contrast between the wood and stone and to the weatherproof-treated spruce wood façade made of binderholz profiled timber, which lends the building an original and luxurious appearance. An impregnating glaze has been applied to it to perfectly withstand external influences and help it to retain its typically white-golden colour for as long as possible.
Construction work
The extension began at the start of November 2016 and it took only 20 weeks to complete the building. Each of the Garden Suites has 30 m² of floor space. The 12 new bedrooms are finished with clay walls, which are perfect for heating and cooling. The bedroom/lounge areas have a spacious south-facing aspect and each suite boasts an adjacent balcony, which, coupled with the high bay windows ensures that the suites are bathed in natural daylight and enjoy seemingly endless views.
The bathroom area is separate from the WC and boasts a free-standing bathtub standing adjacent to the exterior wall and offering a panoramic view over the garden and pool landscape. The bedroom décor consists of black impregnated spruce wood, which contrasts with the visible wood walls and visible wood ceiling.
The execution in detail
A total of 346 m³ of binderholz CLT BBS was used on the project, including 152 m³ of BBS XL. The ceilings and roof of the building are largely made of BBS 125 elements in visible quality spruce. The BBS XL elements were only used in places where this was necessary from a static point of view. Half of the walls are made of visible quality wood, and half of non-visible quality wood.
The wellness zone is reached via the new staircase, in which all surfaces were finished in coloured visible concrete with panelled formwork. The clearly visible grained surface structure of the brushed spruce panels is cleverly set off by the lighting.
The area includes a Finnish sauna, steam rooms and a bio sauna with panoramic windows overlooking the garden landscape. Guests also have the opportunity to relax in the private spa. Directly adjacent is the quiet area, consisting of 3 rest rooms with panoramic windows overlooking the 150 m² natural pond in a wooden surround. The latter provides a chlorine-free swimming experience adjacent to the regeneration pool that has been planted with a wide range of water plants. A new 25-metre long heated sports pool has also been built featuring a coloured, smoothed visible concrete entrance with an infinity edge. This is located directly adjacent to the regeneration pool and is linked to it by an invisible partition.
A wide wooden walkway connects the individual pools and provides access to the sports pool and natural pond. Deck chairs are arranged on the surrounding lawn area - perfect for relaxing and unwinding.
